Tallinn (day 14)

After breakfast, we walked to the old town, where we walked through the old town and saw and visited various sights.
First we visited the Great Guild Museum, which is of course located in the former guild building. This was quite an interesting museum with an exhibition in the basement (which used to be a wine cellar) where you could also see pieces of original gutters and a well, as well as the boiler room (a kind of large chimney, which was used to heat the building). After having seen this museum we walked further through the old town, until we sat on a bench in the park eating a sandwich, after which we went to a coffee shop for a cup of coffee. After this we walked further through the old town, to the higher part of the old town (on the hill) where the wealthier people used to live. The poorer people lived in the lower part. In this higher part of the old town we bought postcards and stamps at a post office (opposite the Russian Orthodox church), wrote on the cards and then posted them. We then walked to a number of lookout points from where you have a beautiful view of the old town (and the Baltic Sea). At one of these lookout points, in the bishop's garden, we again sat down on a bench to eat a sandwich. We continued our route to the market hall, which is located right next to the Tallinn train station outside the old town. After a short walk around the market hall (and a pee break) we got a chicken wrap at a sandwich shop and sat down on a bench to eat it. This left me wanting more, even though it wasn't heated up properly in the microwave. It was still half cold, but that's on a side note... After this delicious snack we walked back towards the old town, around the city wall until we came to the entrance of the city wall museum where you could choose from three different visits: visit the four towers, walk over one wall only or a combination of the two. We chose the four towers. In the first tower the museum started, about 5 to 7 floors high, with various museum pieces and weapons (both from the old days and from the Second World War or slightly more recent). Through a door on the second floor you could walk over a wall to the next towers, these were less interesting (for example an exhibition about what a cafΓ© looked like in the 70s and 80s, during the Soviet era). Finally, we walked outside again, to the Freedom Square. There is a large cross here in memory of a battle shortly after the First World War (from 1918 to 1920). This was not very special to see, from here we walked back to the apartment. On the way we walked to a district where old factory buildings are located that have been renovated and are now a trendy center with terraces and clothing stores etc. After a short walk through this district we walked to the supermarket to get groceries. On the way there we saw a car standing on the busy road / driving at a walking pace with smoke coming from under the hood, many people were looking at this. At the moment that the car wanted to drive on again my father ran to the car to knock on the window and draw the attention of the driver to the smoke (apparently they did not notice it themselves, the older couple was focused on looking at the traffic light, waiting for it to turn green). At that exact moment a police officer also came running who wanted to do the same as my father, with a police car coming up behind the car, and together they escorted the car to the side. After this incident, we went grocery shopping and walked to the apartment. Once back in the apartment the food was cooked, and we sat down to eat. After eating we took it easy and relaxed. After such an intense day in the heat (it was around 30Β°C today) and with many impressions, we thought it was a nice day. Tomorrow we will leave Estonia and drive back to Riga in Latvia, this time to a hotel, because we will only spend the night there. More about this tomorrow!
