Tallinn - Riga (day 15)

Today we left the farthest point of our journey (Tallinn in Estonia) to drive back to Riga in Latvia. So we are slowly getting closer to home, but we are still a long way from there!

The day started with breakfast and making a packed lunch. After that, we packed our things and loaded them into the car. Once everything was loaded we could drive, and we drove out of Tallinn, on our way to a hotel in Riga where we will stay for one night before driving on to Lithuania. Once we left Estonia, we first drove to the former detention and labor camp Salaspils. During World War II this was a camp where political prisoners and later also Jews were forced to do forced labor. Many people died from the cold, malnutrition, poor hygiene and harsh conditions, diseases, torture and neglect or if people tried to escape (or even if they were planning an escape) they were shot tot death. On today's day you will find several statues here in memorial, foundations of (children's) barracks where bushes grow and a memorial monument where the sound of a beating heart can be heard continuously (this can be heard throughout the entire site). After seeing this, we drove to the hotel in Riga, where we first checked in and then brought our suitcases to the rooms. Then we walked to the nearest supermarket to buy bus tickets. With the bus tickets in our pockets, we walked to the bus stop, where we just missed the bus and waited almost half an hour for the next bus. Eventually a (trolley) bus arrived and we drove to the old town. When we arrived in the old town, we walked to a pizzeria, where we had a nice pizza. After dinner, we walked around the old town for a short while, until we came to a square where someone was playing the cello very beautifully (both classical and modern pop songs). Eventually we continued walking, to the bus stop to take the bus back to the hotel. Here we ended the day. Tomorrow we will drive, as said before, further to Lithuania, but not to the capital Vilnius, but to another city. Which city we will go to, you will read tomorrow!
