Olsztyn - Malbork - Gdaล„sk (day 18)

3/9/2024

Opmerkingen

After breakfast, we drove to our next destination: Malbork! Here we visited a castle and then drove on to Gdaล„sk, where we will stay for two nights.
Originally we were going from Olsztyn to Gdaล„sk, but the distance was so short that we decided to make a stopover halfway. And so we did: we first drove to Malbork, also called Marienburg in the time that this part of Poland was still called East Prussia. In Malbork we parked the car in a parking garage and walked to the castle. After buying a ticket, with a mandatory audio tour (of excellent quality by the way!) we walked through this gigantic 13th century castle. This castle, the largest medieval castle in Europe, was built for ceremonial purposes, not as a defensive fortress. All in all we walked through this castle for three hours, which was badly damaged by bombing during the Second World War. Some of the centuries-old statues from the chapel were lost. After this visit, we continued our journey by car to Gdaล„sk (formerly known as Danzig). Upon arrival at the apartment, we brought our luggage inside and my parents did some groceries. I took a nap (on a nice soft bed), after a mediocre night's sleep (I slept on a slightly too small sofa bed, which was not particularly comfortable). When I woke up again, my parents also came back from doing the groceries. Dinner was cooked almost immediately, after which we sat down to eat. After dinner, my parents went for an evening walk, but I didn't really feel like it (given that we have the whole day tomorrow to explore Gdaล„sk), so I stayed in the apartment to take it easy. As I just said, we are going to explore the city tomorrow, so I will tell you a more extensive story and more details about Gdaล„sk.
