Gdańsk - Toruń - Poznań (day 20)

5/9/2024

Opmerkingen

After breakfast, we were supposed to go to Poznań, but we decided to make a stop in Toruń on the way. According to the guide it was worth visiting this city.
This morning we left Gdańsk behind us and first drove to Toruń. When we arrived in this city we parked the car under a large bridge (in the shade) and walked into the old town, which miraculously remained intact during the war. First we went for a coffee at a café, by chance we were sitting in a café right across from the birth house of Copernicus, which is now a museum. After coffee, we visited this museum (admission was free today). After seeing this museum, we walked further through the city, where we went looking for three statues and a fountain, which according to the guide are interesting to see. Namely: a statue of Copernicus, a fountain of a boy playing the violin with frogs around him spitting water (there is a local legend behind this), a statue of a donkey (used to be a wooden statue of a donkey, with a sharp knife attached to it, so a prisoner would be tied to it) and a small statue of a dog holding a bowler hat in its mouth and next to it an umbrella leaning against the streetlight. After seeing this we walked to a square where we sat on a bench under a tree, in the shade, and ate a sandwich. Then we visited a museum about a traveler who traveled 180,000 km in the 1950s to travel around the world. In this museum you can see his suitcases (which are full of stickers from various hotels and airport labels), but also traditional clothing and jewelry from the local population / tribes from, for example, Peru, Mexico, Papua New Guinea and Africa. After seeing this, we walked back to the car, but on the way we remembered that gingerbread is a specialty from this city (there is even a gingerbread museum!). We tasted and bought some gingerbread in a gingerbread shop (where they decorate them by hand on the spot). Eventually we continued driving to Poznań. When we arrived here, we brought our luggage inside the apartment and then did some groceries, then we cooked the food and sat down to eat dinner. After dinner we had a quiet evening. We haven't seen anything of Poznań yet, but that will change tomorrow. Then we will explore the old city, and then leave Poland and drive to Germany, where we will have our last night before we come home on Saturday.
