La Fortuna - Monteverde (day 9)

16/6/2017

Comments

This morning we packed our luggage again and after our breakfast we went to the hot springs of Termelitas del Arenal. This is a nicely landscaped garden with multiple baths ranging from 35°C, 40°C, 42°C and even 50°C. That last one was too hot for us. At this place we also saw a basilisk and a very big iguana. Unfortunately I didn't had my camera with me, when I got my camera they were already gone. Couldn't take photos, too bad!
Once dries up and changed clothes we continued our way to Monteverde, this is one of the most humid place in the country and the temperatures here are much lower. Around noon we had a stopover at The German Bakery for lunch. After lunch we continued, around the Arenal lake (this is a reservoir). Once we crossed the dam we pulled over to take some nice shots of the lake and the volcano in the background. Finally we drove the last part, the last 30 km or so were on dirt roads. This had a reason, Monteverde is a village with quakers and they don't want an asphalt road leading to the village, to prevent the mass tourism. So this was another 50 minutes bouncing on the road. Upon arrival it became clear that Monteverde is an (almost constantly) foggy village on top of a mountain. Once checked in at the hotel we stayed there for a while to relax (the fog had gotten worse in the meantime and it also started to rain). When the rain once stopped, we walked equiped with a sweater, jacket and umbrella towards downtown, this is the village centre that contains of three streets that goes in a triangular shape. After walking around (or better said in a triangle) we walked to a beautifully decorated restaurant for dinner. After dinner we walked the same triangle, but now the other way around and after that we decided to go back to the hotel (it had gotten dark in the meantime and the fog had lifted). In the hotelroom we relaxed a bit more before going to sleep. The plans for tomorrow are not known yet, but we are going to do a night walk. Finally going to see some nocturnal animals, that includes (venomous) snakes, spiders and all kind of other nocturnal animals! That's for tomorrow, for now another night of sleep. Buenas noches!
