This morning we had another great breakfast and after we had to pack up the last things in our suitcases. Then we loaded our luggage in the car and drove back to the airport in Athens, where we returned the rental car and checked in at the airport. After 3 hours of flying we arrived at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Schiphol Airport, where we had to wait for quite a long time for our luggage. For the rest everything went really smooth. Me (and probably my parents as well) had a great vacation, seen a lot, learned a lot and imagined about the ancient Greek era. But also the delicious food everyday. We really enjoyed it. I hope you could also enjoy my travel journeys! Anyway, thank you for taking the time and effort to follow my travel journeys on foot. Take a look at the photos and videos so you can have a better view on what I have described the past 2 weeks. After another great and solid breaktfast, we went to Sounion by car after a long deliberation (about an hour driving). At this site there's the temple of Poseidon located on top of a small mountain at seaside, with a fortress (or at least the ruins of it...) surrounding it. After visiting this site we drove down a little bit. Here we went to the beach in the shadow of the temple and took a refreshing dive in the sea, but we also did some snorkeling. This was a great location to do so, I've seen really beautifully and colorful fish. With a good breakfast on our stomach we took the car this morning to Marathon, here we visited a museum (about the excavations of all kinds of vases, statues, bowls etc.) from the ancient Greeks. In the 2nd building of the museum are excavations of tombs from an old population (can't remember the name). After that we drove on for a couple of kilometers to the Athenian Tumulus. This is a burial mound of Athenian soldiers who died there during the battle against the Persians. After another great breakfast we went to the monasteries this morning. First we went to the monastery that is furthest away, I found this one actually nicer than the one we visited yesterday. Anyway it's bigger (at least, the parts that are open to public). In the monastary was , besides the monastary itself, a museum section about different wars that took place in this region among other things. Including the 2nd world war. This morning we had another great breakfast and after that we took the car to go see the monasteries at Meteora. The monastery we visited is the one that is the furthest away, but also the nicest one. As I mentioned yesterday, the monasteries are build on top of the peculiar shaped rocks. The monasteries are centuries old, in the old times the monks used to pull themselfs but also their tools up in a net. The pulley is still used to this day for constuction tools (for renovation by example), they only use more modern equipment to hoist. After once again a scanty breakfast we left Delphi and headed to Kalampaka. But first we passed the museum where we were yesterday, because a little further up ahead is the excavation site. On this site you can find the temple of Apollo, an amphitheatre and a stadium (track) from the ancient Greek era (4th century B.C.). With a modest, but delicious breakfast on our stomach we travelled to Delphi (220 km driving). But on our way we stopped near Kalavryta. Here's a memorial place, in honor of the terrible events that happenend on December 13th 1943 when all the male villagers (youngest 12, oldest 80) were executed as a revenge on the Greek resistance against the Germans. With a very advanced and delicious breaktfast on our stomach we drove on to Klitoria. This is about 100 km driving from Olympia. On our way we stopped at a picturesquely mountain village for a drink on a terrace. After that we bought some sandwiches for underway, we drove on for a couple of kilometers and pulled over on the side of the road and we walked towards a river where we sat down to enjoy our sandwiches. After a tasty bite we continued our way. |
