Amsterdam - Athens (day 1)

​Good evening / night people!

The day started very early, at half past four(!!) my alarm clock went of. Quickly I packed the last things, ate a sandwich and had something to drink and then we went to Schiphol for the flight to Athens. After 3 hours of flying (which was a very smooth flight by the way) we arrived in the Greek capital. Then we picked up the rental car and drove to the hotel ... but navigating in Greece is a huge drama, the details on the map does not really match the information you see along the way. On the highways it wasn't that bad, but navigating in the streets was a disaster. 

Anyway, at last we arrived at the hotel room, here we dropped our bags, took a breath and I enjoyed eating a sandwich (which I still had) from the Netherlands on the balcony while enjoying the view. But we did not come to laze on the balcony, so we walked into the city right away, for about 4 hours we've been there. And on the way we saw a lot of excavated ruins. But also we walked through a large park in the middle of the city, where suddenly a little zoo with rabbits, geese and rams appeared. This park is really beautifully constructed and very green! Reminds me of Central Park in New York, only without a lake in the middle and more dense. Once we exited the park we walked to the historic part of the city (which includes the Acropolis). On arrival we decided to visit the Acropolis tomorrow, so we went back to the hotel again. After such a long day that started early and after walking too many kms, we were exhausted (partly because of the heat, it was 30°C today in the burning sun). So after freshing up at the hotel I layed down in bed for half an hour and after that we went decided to go to the Acropolis area again! Only this time we took the subway near where we were earlier today, only just a little further away where we haven't been yet. We walked around for a while (it was already around half past 7 / 8 o'clock, Greek time) looking for a restaurant to eat. Well, I had already been starving for about 2 or 3 hours, so I was glad that we finally entered a restaurant. And it was more than worthy to stay hungry for such a long time as we had a roof terrace overlooking the Acropolis which was beautifully lit (it was already dark). And the food was really good as well, so there couldn't be a better way to end the 1st day in Athens! After dinner (now it was almost 11 o'clock in the evening, Greek time), we took the metro straight back to the hotel. Time for a well-deserved night's rest, because tomorrow there will be a long day of walking where, as I mentioned earlier, among other tings we are going to visit the Acropolis (with the Parthenon). Moreover, we will stay for 2 nights at this hotel and then the grand tour through Greece will finally really start! For now a good night and see you tomorrow!
