Nea Makri (day 13)

16/6/2016

Opmerkingen

With a good breakfast on our stomach we took the car this morning to Marathon, here we visited a museum (about the excavations of all kinds of vases, statues, bowls etc.) from the ancient Greeks. In the 2nd building of the museum are excavations of tombs from an old population (can't remember the name). After that we drove on for a couple of kilometers to the Athenian Tumulus. This is a burial mound of Athenian soldiers who died there during the battle against the Persians.
The Athenians had won this battle by the way (I think and I don't know for sure, this was the only victory the Greek had against the Persians. To communicate this victory (on the 11th or 13th of September) back to Athens, there was 1 soldier that had to run 42 km from Marathon to Athens (it was also a race against time because the Persians were on their way to Athens by ship from Marathon to Athens). Upon arrival the soldier could only say "victory is ours" when he dropped dead. After seeing this burial mound we went to the sea, close to a place called Dikastika (half an hour driving) to take a refreshing dive in the water but also for some snorkerling along the rocks. The water was once again crystal clear, but there was not much liven. There were some small fishes in shoals, but no things worth mentioning. Once dried up we went to a terrace to get something to drink (you get such a dry mouth from snorkeling). After that we went back to the hotel to freshen up again (or as I would call it desalinate). After that we went to the boulevard of Nea Makri again and on our way back we went to a restaurant for some dinner. With a full stomach we went back to the hotel. Right now I'm gonna watch Germany - Poland (go Milik!) after that I'm gonna take another night's rest and get ready for already our last full day in Greece. The idea for tomorrow (change of plans reserved) is to take the ferry to the island Evia to walk around a bit and for some snorkeling. I don't know what we're going to do for the rest of the day. We will decide that tomorrow morning during breakfast. Saturday unfortunately we have to drive 30 km back to Athens to return our rental car and take the plane to Holland... Everthing comes to an end unfortunately! But first up is tomorrow, then it will be my last journey from Greece. Saturday evening I will write the final post. Good night and see you tomorrow!
