Tolo (day 4)

After a good breakfast we took the car and drove to Mykines, this is about half an hour driving away from Tolo. In Mykines, or actually just outside of it we went to the fortress. Actually, the ruins of it, because it dates back from 1600 until 1300 B.C. thus making it the oldest ruins of the ancient Greek civilization. In the ruins there's a royal tomb, a palace, storage depots, a well and an underground cistern.

After seeing all this we continued our way by car, because a little further up ahead there's a treasury that belongs to these ruins. From the outside the treasury looks like a mound with a very high and narrow "gate". On the inside it looks like a brick constructed dome, except it's not really roundly shaped, in fact it's more pointy. After this we drove back a little bit towards Tolo. Onroute there's a town called Nafplio. This was the capital of Greece until 1934, after that Athens became the capital. On the edge of the town there's a mountain and on top of that mountain lies a medieval fortress, exactly how you would think a fortress would look like. We made a leap in time from between the 16th century to the 13th century B.C. until around 1800 A.C.. In this fortress there are about 4 or 5 bastions en a prison. Unfortunately the weather changed exactly when we visited te fortress, there was a pouring rain. The benefit of it is that there are no tourists around. It was nice and quiet. At a certain moment the rain had stopped and the sun was shining again and immidiatly we started to boil again. It's that hot when the sun shines! After more then an hour walking around on the fortress (where you have an amazing view over the sea and the surrounding mountains), we got back to the car and drove to the hotel. But we didn't even drove for 100 meters when I saw a turtle (quite a big one actually) crossing the road! I was very surprised to see one here, what on earth is a turtle doing up here on top of the mountain and close to a fortress? We pulled over and my dad lifted the turtle up and put him safely down on the other side of the road. Once at the hotel it was time for the traditional siesta again, I was completely exhausted and I think I slept for almost 2 hours. After waking up again we had dinner in the hotel restaurant (in the meantime it started to rain, for quite a long time actually) and after that we strolled down a shopping street to look for an ATM to get some cash. While walking my sandals gave up (R.I.P. sandals), so right away we started looking for some new sandals. Unfortunately we didn't see it, we did see some flipflops and crocs. But I won't be needing those, haha! Tomorrow we'll be leaving Tolo already and we'll be driving via Sparta (unfortunately not much to do here) and Mystras (a monastery village) to Gythio. In this place we'll be spending 1 night. But first still a night to go in Tolo (where the weather has cleared up in the meantime). Good night for now and see you tomorrow!
