Tolo - Gythio (day 5)

8/6/2016

Opmerkingen

After a good breakfast we got in the car to drive 190 km to Gythio. But on our way we drove to Mystras via Sparta. This is a monastery village that contains a lot of ruins and about 5 quite intact monasteries. These monasteries are build against a mountainwall, so it's a lot of climbing and catching your breath. The terrain is actually massively big and sepperated in 2 pieces.
The lower part is where the monasteries and ruins are, on top of the mountain (a 2 minutes drive by car) is the fortress, dating from the Byzantine era. At least the ruins and the outerwalls. But still very impressive to see, escpecially because it's 15 minutes walking from the car al the way up to the fortress. It's exhausting, but very well worth it! You can enjoy a wonderful view over the valley and the gap. In the meantime it's half a day later (in between the 2 parts we went to the village down below for a lunch) and we continued our way to Gythio. We arrived by evening and after checking in the hotel, dropping our luggage in the hotelroom and freshning up we made an evening stroll along the quay (Gythio is a fishing village and our hotel is close to the quay). In the village centre there's not much to do, so we walked into the opposite direction towards the boulevard where the restaurants and happenigs are located. We walked to the island just of shore via the dam. After walking up and down the island we went to the first restaurant we saw for dinner. We had a seat on the terrace on the edge of the quay so we could look at the fishes in the water during our meal (which we fed breadcrumbs from our starter). It was funny to see how the fishes were fighting over the breadcrumbs like piranhas. I also saw a couple of crabs walking on the bottom (the water is about half a meter to a meter deep, but crystal clear) and a rat walking on the wall of the quay up ahead. After dinner we have seen enough and decided to go back to the hotel. So far this day, tomorrow should be a fun day as well. Then we will be driving to Pylos via Areopolis (not far from here we are doing a cave exploration!), Agios Nikolaos, Limeni and Mani. Pylos is supposed to have a beautiful beach with a great opportunity for snorkeling. So if we have some time, energy and willing left we will absolutely do that! I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, I'm excited. More about this tomorrow, see you then!
