Klitoria - Delphi (day 9)

With a modest, but delicious breakfast on our stomach we travelled to Delphi (220 km driving). But on our way we stopped near Kalavryta. Here's a memorial place, in honor of the terrible events that happenend on December 13th 1943 when all the male villagers (youngest 12, oldest 80) were executed as a revenge on the Greek resistance against the Germans.

After quickly seeing this we entered Kalavryta and we stopped here to take a train through the mountain valleys to Diakopto (40 km back and forth). This was spectacular to see, the train drove along waterfalls and through tunnels. Besides that some parts of the track are so steep the train is pulled by a chain (just like in a rollercoaster). Ofcourse there's also a beautiful view over the valley and the mountains in the background. Once back in Kalavryta we bought some sandwiches for underway. Then we continued our way to Delphi. After a long while driving we left the peninsula Pelopennesus via a large bridge over the Mediterranean Sea behind us. At the brigde there's a fortress dating from the Venetian, Ottoman and Byzantine eras. We were aloud to enter quickly (and free of charge) to take some photos of the brigde. At the exit the supervisor gave us 2 nice brochures about the fortress. After crossing the bridge by car we stopped at the beach to take some photos of the bridge from the other side of the sea. After that we drove of to Delphi. This was only just a few hours driving. Upon arrival we dropped our luggage at the hotelroom and we walked to the museum (about 1 km up ahead). This museum is about the things found at  excavations near the temple of Apollo, including statues. At the museum we bought tickets (€12 p.p.) that are valid for the museum as well for the excavation site. You can decide which one you do first and when. That's excactly what we're going to do, because tomorrow morning we'll go to the excavation site and today we'll be doing the museum. After visiting the museum we went back to the hotel to refreshen ourselfs so we can go the restaurant close to the museum. This restaurant is owned by the same person that owns the hotel where we're staying. So we had a 10% discount on our dinner! After the fine meal we walked back to the hotel through the shopping street to mentally prepare ourselfs for tomorrow. Then we'll be driving tot Kalampaka via Meteora (235 km), unfortunately this is already our second to last day place where we'll be staying (time flies by way too fast!). The weather forecast for tomorrow by the way is rain, that ain't pretty... For the day after tomorrow 40°C is expected, talking about extremes! 😥 😰 But first one night to spend in Delphi (which is by the way known for it's own kind of Olympic Games from the antiquity, called the Delphic Games).
