Casablanca - Rabat - Meknès (day 3)

After breakfast we continued our journey to Meknès, where we first stopped at the capital of Morocco, Rabat. Where we spent the biggest part of the day.

The first place of interest in Rabat that we visited was a medieval mosque, at least what was left of it. On the same compound as the mosque there's also a modern mosque with on one side of the building the tomb of one of the former kings of Morocco: king Mohammed V (the grandfather of the current king, Mohammed VI) and on the other side of the building a museum which was closed due to renovation works. After visiting this we drove with the bus for a little while to visit a former casbah (=a residential complex surrounded by a wall with on each corner a guard tower) which is nowadays a part of a neighborhood. In this former casbah we walked upwards until we reached a viewing point where we had a nice view over the Atlantic Ocean (where's also a cemetery right next to the ocean). Next on we continued our way, where we left Rabat for Meknès. On our way there we stopped for a coffee break and a sanitary visit. After that we continued to Meknès. Once we arrived there we walked through the medina (=a larger version of a casbah) where we ended at a sort of official residence of some sort of mayor, where we had lunch. The dining room is beautifully decorated with a wood carved ceiling and panels, mosaic pillars and walls etcetera. The lunch contained of an appetizer, couscous with seven different vegetables, chicken and beef from the tajine as the main course and a complete fruit bowl (grapes, oranges, bananas and melon) as dessert. After lunch we continued our way through the medina where we entered a mosque. Right next to the mosque, on the same area there's the tomb of the founder of Meknès with on both sides of the tomb each a clock which were given to him by Louis XIV. After this we drove to the hotel, where we stopped at an ancient Jewish cemetery on our way there. Once we arrived at the hotel we had a little less than two hours for ourselves. In the time given we explored the area and went to a watchmaker to let the wristband of my dad's watch get repaired and where he also bought a new pair of sandals (the old ones had their best time). In the meantime it was almost time for dinner, so we walked back to the hotel where we were right on time for dinner. Dinner contained of vegetables, potatoes and beef from the tajine as main course and a soup as appetizer and a fruit cocktail as dessert. Closing off this day with such a nice dinner isn't a punishment! Tomorrow our journey continues to Fes, where we will visit a Roman ruins complex and a pottery. Au revoir!
