Bruck an der GroรŸglocknersraรŸe - Kranjska Gora (day 4)

28/8/2021

Opmerkingen

The day started with driving on the GroรŸglocknerstraรŸe, this is a mountain pass over the high mountains. We expected to see a lot of beautiful snowy mountain peaks, but that was quite disappointing...
Once we started the climb we disappeared more and more into the fog. So we didn't see much of the mountain peaks. When we arrived at the second-highest point it started to snow lightly, and we had some coffee there. While we were enjoying our coffee we saw how the fog got thicker and thicker. After paying for the coffee we wanted to continue, but the fog didn't want to go away. Eventually we continued on and on the other side of the mountain (at the highest point we drove through a tunnel) the fog was gone, there were just some clouds here and there. From this point on the road went down towards the valley and in the valley there is a side road leading towards the glacier, we went there, and we were just in time! After we have seen the glacier and took photos of the glacier it disappeared in the fog, so you couldn't see the glacier anymore. There is however an information point where there are some exhibitions about life in / on the glacier (think about insects or a 6,000-year-old tree that was found after the glacier ice melted) or about the history about cars. When we were outside again it already started to snow heavily. When we drove back down the snow changed into rain and the fog had lifted. Eventually we had a lot of sunshine in the village in the valley where we enjoyed lunch with a view over the villages' church and the snowy mountain peak, the one from the glacier, in the background! After the lunch we drove on to Kranjska Gora in one go, where still in Austria we got pulled over by the police. We got a penalty ticket for speeding (80 km/h where 60 km/h is allowed, the fine wasn't that high luckily!). We were able to continue on. Once arrived at the apartment in Slovenia it turned out that the owner didn't understand English or German, so communicating was quite difficult and with a half word of German. Once settled in on the room we first arranged our next accommodation, after that we walked into the village to have some dinner and do some groceries. After that we went back to our room. Tomorrow we will go deeper into Slovenia, to the world-famous Bled. Here we will stay for two nights.
