Bangkok (day 3)

After once again a good night rest it was time for the first full day in Bangkok. We bought our breakfast at the 7-Eleven shop and ate it at a small park. Next we took the sky train towards the river where we continued by boat in the direction of Chinatown. Here we visited the local markets, and we bought some things for the lowest prices possible, for example a whole collection of socks for just 5 euros! In between we visited the Chinese Buddhist temple. Afterwards we walked through the Indian quarter, to the Sikh temple, but there was not much to do there.
Next we visited the Wat Traimit, this temple has a massive golden stupa. After witnessing this from up close we wanted to take the metro to Lumphini Park, but the entrance to the underground was nowhere to be found, so we stopped searching and took the tuktuk towards the park. Lumphini Park is well known for the Asian water monitor which walk freely here. These species are smaller than their brother the Komodo dragon and commonly don't attack humans, so no worries! Upon arrival at the park we saw how big the park is and how many people are working out (aerobics) or running. Especially the runners remind me of the runners in Central Park, New York. After walking for a while we sat down on the edge of a gazebo, to enjoy the environment and the pleasant temperature, but we haven't seen a water monitor yet. After asking about it to an old man he pointed at the island on the lake that you can reach by crossing the bridge. So we walked over there. On our way we saw the first monitor swimming towards us! Once we crossed the bridge we immediately saw the second one, this one bigger than the previous one, sitting on a rock. We walked a little more, when we saw two more monitor lizards swimming along the shore, but it was already getting dark (and seen the fact that Thailand is close to the equator it gets dark within half an hour...) So quickly crossing the bridge back to the 'safe' zone and walking out of the park. In the meantime it was also time for some dinner. So after a short walk we stopped by at the Pizza Hut which is close-by the sky train station. Next we took the sky train (just for one stop) towards our hotel. After such a long day of walking you can feel the feet and back aching, that's why it's an early one today... Tomorrow we're leaving Bangkok already, and we are heading to Kanchanaburi. This place is well known for the 'Bridge Over The River Kwai'. See you then! ?

By the way I forget to mention some nice facts about Bangkok earlier, so here they are:
  • Bangkok is not the official name of the city, that will be 'Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit'. This makes Bangkok having the longest place name in the world! Because this is hardly to work with or to remember (especially for foreigners), they named it Bangkok. That's a lot easier!
  • Bangkok is the hottest city in the world, the average temperature all year round basically never goes below 20 Β°C (not even at night!)
