Antalya - Demre (day 3)

6/9/2025

Opmerkingen

Last night I slept a bit better than the night before, but still far from ideal. We started the day with breakfast and also made some sandwiches for lunch. Today we drove to Demre, a small village about 2.5 hours from Antalya. Along the way, we made a few stops.
The first stop was at a spot along the road by the sea. We ate our sandwiches there while a fairly strong but pleasant and refreshing wind was blowing. Once we finished eating, we continued along the coast until we found a beautiful place to stop: a bay with crystal-clear azure-blue water and a cave. We quickly stopped there to take a photo before heading on to Demre. This village is known for its many greenhouses, where mainly tomatoes and peppers are grown. Once in Demre, we first drove to Myra, which borders Demre to the north. Myra is, of course, famous for its local bishop, Saint Nicholas! First, we visited a place in Myra with a largely intact amphitheater and, right next to it, the well-known necropolis carved into the mountainside. After that, we went to the church where Saint Nicholas was bishop in the 4th century. He is also buried there. I didn’t place my shoe, I’ll wait until it’s nearly December 5th... ;) Finally, we drove to the apartment. After getting the key to the room and bringing all our things inside, we took a refreshing dip in the pool. We stayed there for at most an hour, and after freshening up and arranging accommodation for tomorrow, we took the car into the village center (just a few minutes’ drive away) to do some grocery shopping. After shopping, we went for a short walk to look for a restaurant, which isn’t that easy in a non-touristy village. Eventually, we came across a small local restaurant, which was quite full when we arrived. We had a nice (local) meal there and ended up being the last customers to leave. Back at the car, we drove back to the apartment, making it an early evening. I’ll probably grab a puzzle book in a bit and take it easy. Tomorrow we’re heading to Fethiye, about 2.5 hours’ drive from here, but no doubt we’ll make a few stops along the way.
